In a world that seems to strive for perfection with a perfect career, perfect relationships and perfect home we easily miss the beauty that lies in imperfection, the unique beauty of an imperfect form.
Growing up I was always creating, crafting and making, being actively encouraged to glue, build and sew at every opportunity, an expressive pastime I engender in my own children. Unfortunately life didn’t take me down the wonderful path of ceramics early, rather I discovered it in my search for a release from the stresses that came with a career in social care; an evening course with friends turned out to be the start of an overwhelming passion. Learning the art of ceramics involves frequent frustration but more often complete joy and one learns to appreciate the unexpected outcome with forms that although not intended have their unique and unexpected beauty.
Embracing the allure of such imperfections has guided my development as a ceramicist; each of my pieces are completely unique, hand crafted and fired to very high temperatures with reactive, lead free glazes that produce a never ending and sometimes unpredictable array of beautiful finishes. No two pieces will ever be the same (even if I tried!); being handmade the beauty of imperfection really shines through and this will transform an everyday item into something very special.
I longed for the ability to design, create and fire my own functional and decorative stoneware and occasionally express myself more passionately by taking a dip into the wonderful world of porcelain. Whilst living in Portugal I was most fortunate to receive the tutelage of a most inspirational ceramicist. This period of confidence building nurtured my desire to take the significant leap forward to establish my own workshop and become a full time ceramicist.
